Staffordshire History Centre
Stafford, Staffordshire
Our practice was commissioned by Staffordshire County Council to create a new History Centre for Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent. The centre, located in Eastgate Street in Stafford, holds historical records and collections up to one thousand years old. It provides a rejuvenated service combining together three valuable collections from the Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent Archive Service, the County Museum and the William Salt Library in a welcoming destination for all of those with an interest in local history.
Along with a new community exhibition space, modern reading and search rooms and a packed programme of activities, the centre includes additional strong rooms, providing storage for an additional 25 years of future collections.
National Lottery funding was secured towards the new centre by Staffordshire County Council and partner William Salt Library Trust in July 2021. The centre opened to the public in November 2024.
Staffordshire county councillor Victoria Wilson told BBC Radio Stoke the opening would be a “very exciting moment” for her. She said: “I cannot wait to throw the doors open to the public so they can look into this little window of the past to see what Staffordshire and history here is all about.”
